The tradition of Bosnia and Herzegovina is decorated by many crafts. One of them is the coppersmiths’ craft that came in Bosnia and Herzegovina with the arrival of the Ottomans in the 16th century. This craft is part of the trades to which tinsmiths belong. Some create items of copper, while others are tin coating. So, they made various items, and the Mangala is one of them. The word Mangala is -in the literal meaning- item for transporting or carrying and is Arab origin. Today by the word Mangala or Dagara, which is another name for this object, we mean the utensils made of copper, or earth material, that is used for heating shops, workshops and houses, to preserve the heat of meals and for coffee preparation and to maintain its heat. In addition to its practical application, Mangala was used also for decorative purpose, so rich families owned decorated, carved Mangalas. In Mangala, in the lower part of it, firstly ashes are put, then the coal that is turned into embers. To make houses smell nice, people puts a special grass that is usually brought from Kaaba by the pilgrims.
