Ever since the time of Isa-beg Isaković, well-situated and scholarly people found ways to contribute to their country and their people in ways which benefit the general welfare. In the very heart of Sarajevo, Adil-beg Zulfikarpašić wrote a new page in the history of Bosnian waqf setting the foundation for the Bosnian Institute in Sarajevo. Numerous historical exhibits as well as well as various other accompanying material are kept within the walls of this complex today.

Among those is a collection of Syrian furniture, which also includes the seat that caught our eye. The seat represents a perfect blend of walnut and traditional Arabian decoration, a marquetry of nacre and silver. Its making begins with the cutting of dried walnut wood, after which a skillful artist shapes the pieces into the desired form. Once that part is finished the nacre is carefully cut and polished, so that it fits perfectly into the slits of the nutwood. It goes without saying that all of these steps require a dedication to detail, precision and outstanding artistical skills. Once the desired form is achieved the furniture is coated with high quality protective varnish to protect and preserve the sensitive nacre and wood. Many are the factors that determine the price of the finished product - the complexity of the craft, the time required, the quality of the nacre, the type of wallnut wood used as well as all the shapes present, which are very hard to achieve and require a tremendous amount of time.
