The fortress known as “White bastion” represents one of the most impressive and important historical locations in Sarajevo. It is located on the southeastern edges of the former old town, overlooking the Miljacka valley. Throughout history, it had an important strategic position. It is part of the defensive walls of the city that once surrounded it, and now surround the town settlement of Vratnik.
The value of this cultural heritage site lies in the finds that were found in different layers and come from several time periods, from the Middle Ages to the Austro-Hungarian era. Archaeological research resulted in the remains of a medieval fortress from the 14th century, and the Ottoman period (17th century) when the fortress was expanded and new buildings were built inside it.
During the Austro-Hungarian period, one part of it and some internal buildings were demolished, and new ones were built. Archaeological findings are preserved in the collections of the Museum of Sarajevo.
