The main individual in a guild was \u0107ehaja<\/strong>, and in addition to their regular work in the shop, they were primarily responsible for external operations of the organisation, its representation with the authorities, issuance of permits for opening of new shops, fines, etc. After \u0107ehaja, the second important person in a guild was kalfaba\u0161a<\/strong>, who, among other things, supervised the work and operations within the guild. A spiritual leader of the guild was \u0161ejh<\/strong>, who also led the ceremony for the proclamation of kalfa<\/strong>. Internal affairs of the guild were the responsibility of jigit \u2013 pa\u0161a<\/strong>, and orders of \u0107ehaja were announced to the members of a guild by \u010dau\u0161<\/strong>. In addition, every guild had its bajraktar<\/strong>, a person who bore the flag at the head of procession during a ceremony.<\/p>\n

The largest guilds included: blacksmiths, kazand\u017eijas<\/strong> – coppersmiths, kujund\u017eijas<\/strong> – goldsmiths, tabaks<\/strong> – leathersmiths, sara\u010des<\/strong> \u2013 saddle makers, \u010dizmed\u017eijas<\/strong> – boot makers, \u0107ur\u010dijas<\/strong> – leather and fur clothes makers, \u0107ebed\u017eijas<\/strong> \u2013 blanket weavers, abad\u017eijas –<\/strong> rural clothes makers, terzijas<\/strong> – urban clothes makers, hala\u010des<\/strong> – wool combers, ned\u017eares<\/strong> – carpenters, mud\u017eelites<\/strong> – bookbinders, etc.<\/p>\n

Products and craftwork were sold in specific places. In shops and stores of one craft or guild, only goods of such artisans cold be bought. Crafters of one craft and their shops were grouped in one location, or in one or more streets, which developed into one \u010dar\u0161ija, and all the \u010dar\u0161ijas of all the guilds together formed Ba\u0161\u010dar\u0161ija<\/strong>, whose streets were named after these crafts.<\/p>\n

From the arrival of Ottomans until 1878, there were 57 different crafts in Sarajevo. Since smaller and similar crafts used to make one guild, there were 31 guilds at the time. There is no information about guilds of comb makers (tarak\u010dijas), ke\u010ded\u017eijas or saddle cloth makers, bardak\u010dijas or potters and some others.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
