Qur'an

Qur'an is introduced to the Balkan peninsula in the 15th century during the Ottoman invasion. Majority of the population converted to Islam during this period but the holy book remained written in Arabic as the Islamic tradition dictates. Samples of the Qur'an were written on animal skins using calligraphy. The use of pictures of animals and people is strictly forbidden by the Qur'an and the ancient authors used lines and letters to adorn the holy book creating complicated geometrical designs.
These geometric designs mostly signify the unity of the believers.

The method of writing the Qur'an on animal skins was used until the middle of the 19th century at which time the first print edition of the Qur'an was made on paper.
