A key for traditional shop

A key for a different traditional shops that is exposed in Museum of Sarajevo is one of the objects deriving from Ottoman Period. Ottoman Empire had brought its culture and tradition on Bosnian area. That is how the development of craft-workshops called "ducani" had begun.
"Ducani" were constructed from wood. Front side was covered with some kind of a shutter which was consisted of two horizontal pieces. Those two pieces were locked with metal keys and one of those keys is exposed in Museum of Sarajevo.

Keys have had a special joint that was enabling a key to be banded for easy carrying. First part of the key was the same for all keys. It had a ring shape gripper and long metal holder that was connecting the gripper with the joint.Second part was a little bit shorter and it had a thin, long, cylindrically shaped metal part. The end of that part was metal plate with special carvings for each key and the first part was connected with the joint. Because of those carvings each workshop, "ducan" could be opened only with one key.

At the end it could be said that the same keys where used for locking "magaze". "Magaze" were storage rooms built with the stones in the circular shape. They had big wooden doors locked with the previously mentioned key
