Long knife
The goldsmiths are craftsmen who make jewls and other decorated objects of silver and gold. The usual work technology is filigran, granulation and casting. This craft was exceptionaly developed until the end of the 19th century and Sarajevo's goldsmiths were exceptionaly respected citiziens. The goldsmiths craft exists even today, and there is a few craftsmen in Sarajevo who still keep the tradition of making jewels, amulets, knives and other objects.
One of the master products of Sarajevo's craftsmen is the long knife, the handle of which is made in filigree with red perls, while the blade is ingraved with the geometrical and floral motives. The goldsmiths would make the knife itself, while filigranns would make fillings, by bending and weaving silver wires in order to make precise ornaments that would fill in the holes on the knife handle. The knives were primarely made for the close-combat purposes and for the daily use as well. As the such knives have richely decorated handle, they represented a prestigeous part of men's traditional outware. This was the status symbol of the members of rich bey's families .
